It can flex to absorb shocks caused by uneven terrain, and provide an easier ride. Carbon chairs are the lightest powerchair on the market, weighing just 32 pounds.

This advanced material is made from carbon-based thin filaments atoms bonded together in a crystal structure. The fibers are then woven into sheets or sandwich laminates and then infused with resins, creating a rigid material that is both durable as well as lightweight. The material is able to be used in the manufacture of high-performance components for automotive, aerospace and sporting goods applications.

Carbon fiber production is complicated and requires a significant amount of equipment and experience. The process starts with a pre-cursor of polymers that is the molecular basis for the carbon-rich fibers. Historically, this was rayon or pitch; today, the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) which is produced from the chemicals used in everyday life, propylene and ammonia.

Carbon fiber can be shaped into a variety of composite materials. The stiffness and strength of the material can be controlled by changing the temperature at which it is processed.
