If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide the best treatment. The doctor can also determine if the cancer has spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

When a mesothelioma is advanced the chances of survival are less. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor might recommend a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the prognosis of the patient.
