A biopsy is the removal the smallest piece of tissue to be examined. This test can determine if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has not spread and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also provide a curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient. For example paracentesis to remove fluid from the abdomen.

If mesothelioma progresses and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemo. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than chemotherapy on its own.
