Like other iRobots with premium features (including the top model), they use smart mapping to produce precise floorplans and avoid household obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also have Carpet Boost, a feature which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored very well in our tests on floors that were bare They are also adept in cleaning dog hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to become stuck on shoes and socks, and it couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people well during our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save money. It's also quiet and works when you're at work or school. It doesn't have the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with self-emptying docks, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be replaced with one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and quick navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with a powerful suction and self-emptying bin. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and offer more efficient cleaning. The app lets you set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It has a battery life that is comparable to other models.

You can instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mop and extend them when it's in a room with carpet, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also ideal to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a range of rooms and floors with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically emptys into its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming it, something hasn't been seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba rather than the compact models This robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that has an exemplary 10/10 in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including a camera, structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has a simple mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings prior to work or at night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive however, not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and a little more cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum that vacuums and mops vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that will let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with obstructions or power cords.

The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to complete the task. It also has an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas are.

If you have a larger home, you should consider choosing a model that has zones or spot cleaning modes. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. For families that are busy recharge functions and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd think from its price. It's a pro at vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot vacuum cleaner reviews mop cleaners we've tested. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to a variety of features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

It can also reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. You can also set up a spot-clean which will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and more affordable alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is louder than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that can't be used as an emptying bin.
