They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient. For instance paracentesis, which is a procedure to drain the abdomen of fluid.

If mesothelioma progresses the chances of survival are less. The tumors could become resistant to treatment and may recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve the prognosis of a patient than chemotherapy on its own.
