Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues, however, that prevent them from being our top choice. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to get stuck on shoes and socks and could not navigate densely packed rooms very efficiently during our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a great deal for those whose office or home has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save some money. It's also very quiet and can work when you're at work or going to school. It did a decent cleaning job on various rooms and floors with various flooring types including certain area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-notch and it was nimbly avoiding fake dog socks, turds, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen on other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxy units this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our reviews. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is thanks to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's loud which could be an issue if you use it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing some more volume and some additional cost this is a capable two-in-one that should please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features that let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its top rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front for real-time detection of hazards however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house depending on the degree of dirt they are.

If you have a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to organize an best automatic vacuum spot-clean. It can also be used to it to rank your most filthy areas to improve performance.
