A biopsy is the removal of tiny pieces of tissue that is examined. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading and the doctors are able to remove the tumors. They will also provide a curative treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has spread inside the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, such as paracentesis to drain the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The specialist may suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of the patient.
