Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our floor tests that test for bare floors, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first option. For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology which means it's susceptible to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with an image sensor that lets it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great deal particularly if your office or home has a lot of bare floors and you're looking to save money. Plus, it's very quiet and you can use it when you're at work or school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for one that is wet in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its smart cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in tackling larger particles, like pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and an automatic bin for emptying. It's the best rated robot vacuum robot vacuum for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing combination vacuum and mop makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste, and it learns the layout of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it has vacuumed. This is a feature we haven't seen on other robotic hoovers vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that appears like a regular Roomba than the competition's compact models, this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our evaluations. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It has advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that has 100% in our testing due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It has a simple mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable however, it's more expensive and make more noise.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you forget about your chores. Similar to Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot vacuums that mop makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to draw out floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time but this was not reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house depending on how dirty these areas tend to be.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice command. A stairway mode is useful if you have a lot furniture. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off can be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you'd think from its price. It does a stellar job vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses using only one pad and a reciprocating movement which is cleaner than the majority mop cleaners for robots that we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that can be washed.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas you've marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app also gives access to many options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, which means it is able to reach corners and under furniture more easily. It has an impressive 8,000 Pascal suction and sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's more appealing, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but is more prone to get caught on low thresholds and is a bit louder than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has an app that is less intuitive, and a smaller base station that does not double as a bin for emptying.
