If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all the tumors and provide the best treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

When a mesothelioma is advanced, the prognosis becomes poorer. This is because the tumors may become resistant to certain treatments, and they may develop a recurrence. The doctor might suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than chemotherapy alone.
