Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Typically objects with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into trinkets, armor, weapons and tools for gathering, offering an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, gathered in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward for missions or chests. Certain upgrades can also be equipped with special cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

In order to upgrade an item of armor, the user must select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats as well as the components or materials required for the upgrade.

There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from earlier versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a handful of essential items and maximize their impact instead of spreading upgrade costs across multiple items.
