Carbon Fiber

Carbon Fiber is extremely strong and lightweight. Carbon Fiber is an ideal material for wheelchair frames particularly when it's molded to accommodate the user. It is able to flex to absorb shocks from uneven terrain and offer a smoother ride. A carbon chair can weigh as low as 32 lbs., making it the lightest power wheelchair on the market.

This advanced material is made by forming thin filaments of carbon atoms bonded together in a crystalline structure. The fibers are made into sheets or sandwich laminates and infused with resins to create an extremely stiff material that is both strong and light. The material can be used to fabricate high-performance components for aerospace, automotive and sporting goods applications.

The process of making carbon fiber is a complex process and requires a substantial investment in equipment and expertise. The process begins with a polymeric precursor that is the molecular basis for the carbon-rich fibers. The carbon fibers were made from rayon or pitch. Today they are mostly made from polyacrylonitrile. It is made from the chemical ammonia, a common commodity, and propylene.

Carbon fiber is shaped into a variety of composite materials. By changing the temperature of the material you can adjust its strength and stiffness. Carbon fibers can be heated in order to increase their tensile strength and modulus of elastic. It can also be machinized to create voids and holes which reduce its tensile strength however it increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation, which protects it from the damage caused by corrosion. It has a lower coefficient than steel and is therefore less likely to change its shape when exposed to heat. The properties of fatigue are superior to those of metal so components made from carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

One of the most well-known uses of carbon fiber is plane tailplanes and fuselages. The strength and light weight of the material have allowed designers to make planes that are more efficient and safer than before.
