Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example, a weapon with the upgrade template that ends in % will gain an attack damage of 3% each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases as the level of the item rises.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons, and trinkets to provide an extra stat boost or effect while they're in use. They can be acquired through crafting, buying from vendors, trading or looting. Certain upgrades also come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment with a slot for them; the item must have been at least upgraded to the blue level in order for the component to be applied. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied only once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a special kind of upgrade component that is used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment as well as the non-ascended back items. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade Item could include a suffix or prefix, modifying the name of the item to the upgrade (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level, or Rarity, allowing players to create stronger versions of that equipment with less upgrade item Crystals than is required to achieve the same level of upgrade using normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated the Crazed Mechanist, these upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. These upgrades can be purchased by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

The player is able to have the maximum of five boost upgrades at a time; each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-tier version of the item will drop at the time of the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their equipment even when they're not sure how much it will be improved following a reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be expensive, and there is a high possibility that the item will become obsolete or even break when it fails. A unsuccessful upgrade could cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items that can double or even eliminate chance of failure, and some upgrades that provide a bonus when reinserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to enhance the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. Glyphs boost the power of nodes within a radius, which includes any existing affixes. Glyphs are upgraded in various ways, and we suggest upgrading them to 15 levels as soon as you can.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of an Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs you'll need them to be placed on your equipment. Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to boost the stats of specific items by inserting upgraded components. This is known as "upping". Every upgradeable item has an amount that determines its upgraded stats. Upgraded items can be leveled up to a maximum of 385. Each level of item requires different components, and the cost of upgrading increase with each level.

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient can be obtained by finishing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes can be bought from NPCs, or on the upgrade tab of the crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns some Technology Points. These points can be used to leveling up an item level upgrade. When enough points have been earned you will be able to claim your upgrade and receive its additional bonuses.

When a player upgrade a piece of equipment, the base item is replaced by an item that is new. The same armor will receive the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a problem, as it can make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

The upgrades to items can be rerolled, provided that the player has enough tokens to do this. This will cause the item to be exchanged for a new one, which will come with a level 1 base and a totally different set of extra bonuses. This can be beneficial but it shouldn't be done often as it can waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled several times, increasing their value and allowing the player to customize their equipment. An excellent example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and exits water (or is able to swim like dolphins). It is possible to upgrade it several times, each time raising the max roll by a factor of 10. This item can be extremely valuable in PvP, as the best version of it could be worth between 20 and 50 times its value without being upgraded.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to increase the level of their equippable equipment--armor, weapons, and trinkets that are above ilvl 385 by offering the appropriate currency and items to an NPC who upgrades items. The upgrade of armor set pieces will also boost the defense base of that piece, while upgrading weapon equipment will increase the base damage and the strength and dexterity required to meet the upgraded equipment's requirements.

All items can be upgraded up to five times, except for hero gear, which can be upgraded eight times. Each each time you upgrade an item it is given the chance to fail. The failure rate increases the more you exceed the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures can cause the item to return to its original condition and the player having to spend additional materials than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item level upgrade isn't upgraded, the experience bar in its growth bar will be reset to zero. Additionally the item level upgrade will be deducted any gained bonuses such as crit chance and attack damage, and all additional effects associated with that effect (for example, increased heal over time or the speed of reloading). However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied from lowest to the highest. This means that when a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit, the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. A new attribute called Slots is now added to the item definition and the value is recomputed every time an upgrade is applied.

The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The upgrade cost for non-premium products is equal to the base value of the upgrade. For instance, a typical equipment item could have five upgrades, each costing 25,600 Technology Points and 4x Quality Improvement Chance. Hero grade items will come with an incredibly lower cost for each upgrade.

Premium items have different requirements for upgrading than standard gear--for instance, they might require fewer sowels, but more minerals and erons.
