Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also boost extra bonuses such as crit chance and PvE damage.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor in order to provide them with a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained by crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades also have specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue level before the component can be used. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component that is that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging gear that is ascended or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, thereby changing the name of the item it is used on (for example 'Canthan Armor Insignia,' becomes Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades can increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level with normal methods.

A boost upgrade can change the attack or defence characteristics of a weapon, or armor. There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of the Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain gathering tools that are unlimited-use and also through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt has the chance of dropping one of the various Glyphs, and there are also a few rare glyphs that can be obtained as drops from any of the four Faction Crypts.

Once you have the desired Glyphs then you need to place them on your gear. Each Glyph will unlock a unique bonus that boosts a particular set of stat nodes in the vicinity of the Glyph.
