It can also bend to absorb the shock of uneven terrain and offer an easy ride. A carbon chair can weigh as low as 32 lbs. This makes it the lightest power wheelchair on the market.

This advanced material is made of thin filaments made up of atoms of carbon that are bonded together to form a crystal structure. The fibers are then woven into sheets or sandwich laminates and then coated with resins, creating a stiff material which is both strong and light. The resulting material can be used in the fabrication of high-performance parts for automotive, aerospace and sporting goods applications.

The production of carbon fiber is complex, and it requires a significant investment in equipment and knowledge. The process begins with a polymeric precursor that forms the molecular base for carbon-rich fibers. Historically, this was either rayon or pitch; today the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) which is produced from the chemicals used in everyday life, propylene and ammonia.

After carbon fiber is made and shaped, it can be used to shape and layered into composite materials to make various products.
