Carbon Fiber

Carbon Fiber is extremely tough and lightweight. This makes it the perfect material for a frame for a power wheelchair especially when it's molded to the shape of the user. It can also bend to absorb the shock of uneven terrain and offer an easy ride. A carbon chair can weigh as low as 32 lbs. This makes it the lightest power wheelchair on the market.

This advanced material is made of thin filaments made up of atoms of carbon that are bonded together to form a crystal structure. The fibers are then woven into sheets or sandwich laminates and then coated with resins, creating a stiff material which is both strong and light. The resulting material can be used in the fabrication of high-performance parts for automotive, aerospace and sporting goods applications.

The production of carbon fiber is complex, and it requires a significant investment in equipment and knowledge. The process begins with a polymeric precursor that forms the molecular base for carbon-rich fibers. Historically, this was either rayon or pitch; today the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) which is produced from the chemicals used in everyday life, propylene and ammonia.

After carbon fiber is made and shaped, it can be used to shape and layered into composite materials to make various products. By adjusting the temperature of the material you can adjust its stiffness and strength. Carbon fibers can be heated in order to increase their tensile strength and modulus of elastic. It can also be machined to create voids and holes, which reduces its tensile strength but increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation. This shields it from rust. It has a lower coefficient than metal and is therefore less likely to alter its shape when exposed to heat. Carbon fiber has superior fatigue properties than metal, which means it will last longer.

One of the most well-known uses of carbon fiber is in plane tailplanes and fuselages. The strength and lightness of the material has allowed designers to design aircrafts that are safer and more efficient than they have ever been.
