Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item upgrades in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Typically, items that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans aren't affected significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They can be used as an attribute bonus, or additional effect, when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, or found as loot gathered by enemies or obtained from missions and chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain level before they are upgraded.

To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player will need to select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. There are three kinds that are universal upgrades (which include gems) Prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can only be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. Rerolling
