Item upgrading allows players to upgrade item their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks, and each item can only be upgraded as many times before it's "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a select few items and maximize the effect of those items rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.
