It's also prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people efficiently during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or at school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. And, if you need to change the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into a sleek, compact package. 3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

The robot vacuum and mop combination features a sleek, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba model than the boxy units of the competitors. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It has advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to the combination of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely autonomously refill and empty its base station, and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an intuitive mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a loud unit. This could be a concern in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to create the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this wasn't completely foolproof in our tests, and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum has a high suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also comes with an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home based on how dirty these areas tend to be.

If you have a bigger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with spot or zone cleaning mode.
