There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our top option. For instance, the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera to look around corners.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot and have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can be used when you're at work or going to school. The only thing it lacks that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle, however. If you're required to, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few just a few seconds.

The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced, with advanced features including enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could fill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with an easy mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It also has a camera mounted on the front to detect hazards in real-time but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was sometimes confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the home based on how dirty those areas are.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home via the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. For families with busy schedules, a recharge function and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to resume where it left off could be extremely useful.

It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad that has a reciprocating motion that cleans better than most of the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. It's also self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot application guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map.
