A robot vacuum will keep your floors tidy enough to reduce the frequency of manual hoovering. Choose one that has good navigation, can clean corners and stairs and has a huge dust bin that has to be emptied only every few times.

There are models that mop and charge themselves, which is a feature essential for families with pets or children. A majority of the top performers in our tests have good obstacles to avoid.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling the i3 EVO are both identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots are proficient in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets, and they can easily navigate around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home to help the i3+ navigate and clean up efficiently. However, unlike the i7+ or other top rated robots we tested the i3+ doesn't have any obstacle-avoidance features and therefore it could get stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble traversing transitions across surfaces, such as from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, which includes clearing out any clutter or toys it may come across. It's also a good idea to keep the dustbin and filter clean so they aren't clogged by dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning from where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line, and it comes with the most recent features. It is self-charging and self-navigating. However, the most important feature is its auto vacuum cleaner-emptying bin. This will eliminate the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot using voice or through the app.

In our tests the i7+ performed quicker and more maneuverable than our runner-up and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surfaces types, including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, is its self-emptying dustbin which removes a major source of maintenance and lowers recurring costs.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the best robot vacuum for large house to start, stop or pause its cleaning session, move itself around the room and sweep the area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. Once connected, to voice commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of cordless vacs that are like minivans and buses, this small Dyson model feels like a sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in the majority of homes, yet it is also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system traps allergens and releases clean air back into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to collect large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction settings to meet the task being performed. It can quickly switch between handheld and floor vacuum and vice versa.

This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also gives an easy access to two attachments as well as the Wand. This is a significant improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its short run time. As CR's tests have shown, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are not true. This is an average and not a remarkable run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. This is still enough to vacuum the majority of a home that's average size however, it's not enough to cover every area (though a second run-through usually can be effective). That's not to say this model doesn't have its advantages: It's lighter and agile than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is significantly superior on carpets with a low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's an excellent choice for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in an expensive robot. It's capable of sucking up all types of debris and sizes during our tests, and it often passes over the same areas multiple times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, including our top picks, the i3+EVO and j7+ Series. It may get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and is often unable to supply power before returning to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 in that it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower costs for recurring expenses and is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and is able to better navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges faster.

The sleek RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also has physical boundaries strips and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistance. It is also more robust, has a larger motor, and can perform better on floors with low pile and bare.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in the field of home electronics. It's no surprise that they are also among the top producers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app provides a range of options to customize your robotic cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior modifications, docking frequency settings and more. The app is simple to learn and use similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) quite well, cleaning up 86 percent of it. It didn't do very well in avoiding taller items like cords or socks. This was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than some of the other models we tested and could be a deal-breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed through the app. You can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you check in on your children or pets when you're away. The dustbin and the filter can be cleaned to ensure an easy, quick clean-up.
